The Best Things to Do in Ella

Tucked away in the misty Sri Lankan high country, amongst idyllic green hills and gushing waterfalls lies Ella: one of Sri Lankan’s most appealing destinations.

From scaling the heady heights of Ella Rock to laying eyes on the mystical Nine Arch Bridge for the very first time; standing on the edge of the roaring Diyaluma Falls (the second tallest in the country), and winding through the tea plantations and mountains passes on the famous Kandy to Ella train; many of your favorite Sri Lankan adventures can be found right here.

At its heart, Ella is a charming and laid-back village perfect for relaxing, hiking, and escaping the searing temperatures of the southern coast.

Ella’s Famous Nine-Arch Bridge

It’s astonishing to think that a bridge could drive tourists in droves to Ella, yet the Nine Arch Bridge, just outside the town, has done just that.

The Nine Arch Bridge is flanked by verdant forests and tea plantations, standing proudly across the valley below. On misty days, a low cloud hangs in the valley, giving the whole area a moody, mystical feel.

Completed in 1921, the Nine Arch Bridge is built entirely out of brick, rock and cement, with no metal used in its construction – an engineering feat back in those days. Spanning 91 meters at a height of 24 feet, the bridge is on the famous Kandy to Bandarawela (via Ella) train line, with trains passing around five times a day, depending on the ever-changing Sri Lankan train timetable.

Although train times are notoriously unreliable in Sri Lanka, trains tend to pass the Nine Arch Bridge around the following times: 9:30, 11:30, 15:30, 16:30, and 17:30 (read our comprehensive guide here!).

Hike Little Adam’s Peak

Just because it’s called Little Adam’s Peak doesn’t mean it’s any less amazing than the original Adam’s Peak – it’s just easier to get to!

To reach the top of Little Adam’s Peak from Ella it takes around an hour, but if you want to shave some time off the hike then consider getting a tuk-tuk to the start of the trail at Ravana Zipline. From here, it’s only 20 minutes to the top.

Once you’re at the top you can then walk the ridgeline and explore. There are actually three peaks on Little Adam’s Peak and it takes around 30 minutes to reach the furthest one.

Due to safety reasons, I wouldn’t recommend hiking to the last peak if you’re traveling with children. It gets very narrow and steep!

Little Adams Peak is the most accessible hike in Ella and well worth checking out for the amazing views!

Visit Ravana Falls

The first waterfall we’ll mention on this list of things to do in Ella is Ravana Falls. This huge waterfall is really quite impressive to see. Ravana Falls is also one of the closest waterfalls to Ella, making it very easy (and cheap) to get to.

Ravana Falls is located around a 10-minute drive from Ella along the main highway. Every tuk-tuk driver or taxi will know where it is but the location is also on Google maps.

Although you can’t really swim at Ravana Falls, it’s still a nice place to visit.

Around the falls you’ll always see lots of monkeys and there are some juice bars and small shops on the highway near the falls too. During the dry season, you can also hike to the top of Ravana Falls to admire the stunning views from above. During our visit, there was too much water to hike the trail.

A tuk-tuk to the falls and back should cost around 600 rupees. We drove our own tuk-tuk there and it was easy to find and there was plenty of parking on the side of the road.

We had a very great time in Ella at Cozy cottage! The room was spacious and clean. And the view is absolute stunning! The location is a bit far from city but we rented a scooter so we had the pleasure to feel free and ride wherever we wanted.
Mr. Viraj, a staff member was really helpful throughout our stay, helped us with the scooter and the activities. Also arrange breakfast so that we could eat early before our next stop. The breakfast was also very good!!

We did have a really good time at the Cozy Cottage Hotel, even if I felt sick. 3 Nights, stunning view over the hills of Ella, very clean facility, very friendly staff with a very professional hotel manager (I was sick and the staff took very good care for me and brought extra tea and health products). Thanks for such a friendly treatment.
The Breakfast and Food at the restaurant was also very tasty.
Close by there are some small hiking trails and the train station. By Tucktuck, you are in a short time to the center of Ella.

The hotel is located a bit outside of Ella, but this is not a problem as you can quickly get into town with a tuk tuk. The staff organizes a tuk tuk driver, who you can reach at any time via WhatsApp and who brings you back to the hotel. The staff was incredibly helpful and even carried our bags to the room.
The room is huge, very clean and the bed is very comfortable. The view is fantastic.
